The United Kingdom votes for Brexit

On 23 June 2016, in a referendum, 51.9% of British voters chose to leave the European Union, opening a long period of negotiations.

Turnout reached 72%. The result led to Prime Minister David Cameron's resignation and set the country towards an effective departure from the Union, completed in 2020.

The Battle of Bannockburn begins

On 23 June 1314, Robert Bruce's army met Edward II's near Stirling; the Scottish victory, completed on 24 June, marked the Wars of Independence.

A rare medieval battle spanning two days, Bannockburn saw Scottish pikemen defeat a larger English army. Scottish independence would only be recognised in 1328.

Death of Emperor Vespasian

On 23 June 79, Vespasian, founder of the Flavian dynasty and initiator of the Colosseum, died of illness near Reate after a ten-year reign.

Having reached power at the end of the Year of the Four Emperors, he restored Rome's finances. Tradition has him insisting on dying on his feet. His son Titus succeeded him.
