On 2 January 1492, the surrender of Granada to the Catholic Monarchs ended Muslim rule in Spain and eight centuries of Reconquista.

The Nasrid king Boabdil handed over the keys of the Alhambra. The negotiated surrender first promised Muslims religious freedom, soon broken.
