Assassination at Sarajevo
On 28 June 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria, heir to the throne, and his wife Sophie were assassinated in Sarajevo by Gavrilo Princip.
The killing triggered the July Crisis and then the First World War. By a calendar coincidence, the Treaty of Versailles would be signed on 28 June 1919.

The Battle of Kosovo
On 28 June 1389, on the Field of Blackbirds, the army of the Serbian prince Lazar met that of the Ottoman sultan Murad I; both leaders were killed.
Militarily indecisive, the battle opened the way to Ottoman domination of the Balkans. Commemorated on Vidovdan, it is central to Serbian memory.

Death of Empress Theodora
On 28 June 548, Theodora, wife of the Byzantine emperor Justinian and one of the most powerful women in Byzantine history, died in Constantinople.
An actress turned empress, she weighed heavily on politics and law. During the Nika riots of 532, her composure had saved Justinian's throne.
