Independence of Djibouti
On 27 June 1977, the former French Territory of the Afars and the Issas became independent as the Republic of Djibouti.
France's last colony on mainland Africa, the country elected Hassan Gouled Aptidon as its first president. France kept a military presence there.

Mutiny on the battleship Potemkin
On 27 June 1905, the crew of the Russian battleship Potemkin mutinied in the Black Sea over rotten meat, amid the 1905 revolution.
The sailors seized the ship and reached the rebellious port of Odessa. The episode, immortalised by Eisenstein's 1925 film, became a revolutionary symbol.

The Battle of Dettingen
On 27 June 1743, during the War of the Austrian Succession, the Pragmatic Army under George II beat the French of the Duc de Noailles in Bavaria.
It was the last time a reigning British king personally led his troops in battle. Handel composed a 'Dettingen Te Deum' for the occasion.
